The action group, MadDogPAC has put up a billboard off the Palmetto Expressway in South Florida, featuring an image of Donald Trump staring down Fidel Castro. The billboard says 'No to dictators. No to Trump' in Spanish. With a disclaimer on the bottom.
The billboard, just north of Hialeah has ignited debate within a divided community. While a majority of Cuban Americans support Trump (about 58% of Cuban Americans identified as Republican in 2020 according to Pew Research Center), there are still some warning of the very real threat behind a second Trump presidency.
To many Miamians this messaging hits home. And it hits hard. It wasn't only Cubans who had to flee an oppressive regime under Fidel's rule, but Venezuelans who also had to flee from Hugo Chavez and Maduro, among other groups escaping violence and persecution. With many still trying to escape the misery of dictatorial rule today.
An online comment on Hoodline.com might be worth highlighting:
"As a Trump-hating Cuban American, I am pleased to see someone pointing out Trump's dictatorial aspirations to a community that blindly supports him." - Frank.
The group behind the billboard says that this is just a start. Planning to put more anti-Trump billboards across the country. Many of those in Spanish. "He wants to be another dictator and just as evil as Fidel Castro" said Claude Taylor, founder and chair of the action group.
Do you think billboards are an effective tool to target voters?
Yes.
Not so much.
It depends.
